Commoning Curatorial and Artistic Education #7 – Bassam El Baroni

The talk’s starting point is curator and theorist Stephanie Bertrand’s observation that “curating’s inclusionary effects create a shortcut between cultural inclusion and social inclusion”. Which is to say that access to representation of marginalised cultures and their visibility through the sphere of art (cultural inclusion) does not sufficiently translate to access to wealth, resources, and opportunities (social inclusion). How can artists, curators, museums, exhibitions, and programmes address this shortcut to rethink the inclusionary effects they produce? To tackle this, art’s relationship with speculation is discussed, bringing in the concept of ‘leveraging’ as key to thinking how practices may pursue a shift from positing an agenda by imagining the world otherwise, to actioning that agenda by capturing a world and translating it into a set of organisational processes embedded into representations and modes of working. 

Bassam El Baroni is associate professor in curating at the School of Arts, Design and Architecture, Aalto University, Finland. Formerly, he has lectured at the Dutch Art Institute, ArtEZ University of the Arts, Arnhem and was artistic director of the now folded non-profit art space ACAF – Alexandria Contemporary Arts Forum in Alexandria, Egypt (2005–2012). His current research engages with financialization in relation to artistic practices, artists’ engagement with infrastructural futures and histories, and new forms of artist-led activism. Recent curatorial projects include: Infrahauntologies at the Edith-Russ-Haus for Media Art, Oldenburg, Germany, and La Box, ENSA Bourges, France (2021, 2022). He is the author of various essays on artists, art and curating, and editor of Between the Material and the Possible: Infrastructural Re-examination and Speculation in Art (Sternberg Press and Edith Russ Haus, 2022) and co-editor, together with Ida Soulard and Abinadi Meza, of Manual for a Future Desert (Mousse Publishing, 2021).

The two-week Summer School wants to impact commoning strategies in fine arts, and curatorial education by inviting students, staff and external guests to co-teach and teach each other by sharing and discussing their situated experiences of practice and theory in an open and trustworthy way. Students are part of the Shared Campus platform, a network of eight partner universities from Switzerland, Great Britian, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Einbeziehende Effekte 

Ausgangspunkt des Vortrags ist die Beobachtung der Kuratorin und Theoretikerin Stephanie Bertrand, dass “die inklusiven Effekte des Kuratierens eine Abkürzung zwischen kultureller und sozialer Inklusion schaffen”. Das heißt, dass der Zugang zur Repräsentation marginalisierter Kulturen und deren Sichtbarkeit durch die Kunst (kulturelle Inklusion) nicht ausreichend mit dem Zugang zu Wohlstand, Ressourcen und Möglichkeiten (soziale Inklusion) einhergeht. Wie können Künstlerinnen und Künstler, Kuratorinnen und Kuratoren, Museen, Ausstellungen und Programme mit dieser Verkürzung umgehen, um die von ihnen erzeugten integrativen Effekte zu überdenken? Dazu wird die Beziehung zwischen Kunst und Spekulation erörtert, wobei das Konzept der “Hebelwirkung” als Schlüssel für die Überlegung herangezogen wird, wie Praktiken eine Verlagerung von der Aufstellung einer Agenda durch die Vorstellung einer anderen Welt hin zur Umsetzung dieser Agenda durch die Erfassung einer Welt und ihre Übersetzung in eine Reihe von organisatorischen Prozessen, die in Darstellungen und Arbeitsweisen eingebettet sind, verfolgen können. 

Bassam El Baroni ist außerordentlicher Professor für Kuratieren an der School of Arts, Design and Architecture der Aalto-Universität in Finnland. Zuvor war er Dozent am Niederländischen Kunstinstitut, ArtEZ University of the Arts, Arnheim, und künstlerischer Leiter des inzwischen aufgelösten gemeinnützigen Kunstraums ACAF – Alexandria Contemporary Arts Forum in Alexandria, Ägypten (2005-2012). Seine aktuellen Forschungsarbeiten befassen sich mit der Finanzialisierung in Bezug auf künstlerische Praktiken, der Auseinandersetzung von Künstler*innen mit infrastrukturellen Zukünften und Geschichten sowie neuen Formen des von Künstlern geleiteten Aktivismus. Zu seinen jüngsten kuratorischen Projekten gehören: Infrahauntologies im Edith-Russ-Haus für Medienkunst, Oldenburg, Deutschland, und La Box, ENSA Bourges, Frankreich (2021, 2022). Er ist Autor verschiedener Essays über Künstler, Kunst und Kuratieren und Herausgeber von Between the Material and the Possible: Infrastrukturelle Überprüfungen und Spekulationen in der Kunst (Sternberg Press und Edith Russ Haus, 2022) und Mitherausgeber, zusammen mit Ida Soulard und Abinadi Meza, von Manual for a Future Desert (Mousse Publishing, 2021).

Dieses Programm ist Teil der Vortragsreihe der Shared Campus Plattform, Zürcher Hochschule der Künste, im Rahmen einer der Summer Schools von CAMP notes on education.
