Commoning Curatorial and Artistic Education #4 – Sandy Hsiu-chih Lo & Hongjohn Lin

At a time of urgent awareness of the epistemological and ontological issues at stake in contemporary artistic knowledge production, the theme of the documenta fifteen “Lumbung” is an ambitious statement of a progressive expansion of the collective based on its connotation of a social space and a platform for sharing public resources, which in turn retroactively defines what the common is. The meeting is to create a collective discursive situation, which is much similar to the “Lumbung” strategies, embodying multiple heterogeneous alliances and endosymbiosis from within. Through communing the knowledge for the plural epistemologies yet to come, can articulate the marginalized disobedient practitioners and collectives.  

We affirm the values of hybridity from the ethics of sharing and co-working as the politics of alliance that each group understands under the principle of equality in demonstrating local knowledge upheld by each group and respecting the irreducible heterogeneity of singularities.

Sandy Lo Hsiu-chih lives in New Taipei City, Taiwan, and works as an independent

curator, art critic, film critic and filmmaker. Her main research areas include urban studies, philosophical construction of space, gender politics, contemporaneity of indigenous art, and situated knowledge. Curating topography, a curatorial practice method that she has actively used in recent years, uses relative and relational spatial concepts to bring to light different cultural concepts in the pluralistic dialectic concept of place in order to strengthen political and ethical transformation in the becoming of place. She is the co-host of the bilingual online journal “Curatography” which focuses on the study of curatorship in Asia.

This program is part of a lecture series by the Shared Campus platform, Zurich University of the Arts, as part of one of the Summer Schools of CAMP notes on education.

The two-week Summer School wants to impact commoning strategies in fine arts, and curatorial education by inviting students, staff and external guests to co-teach and teach each other by sharing and discussing their situated experiences of practice and theory in an open and trustworthy way. Students are part of the Shared Campus platform, a network of eight partner universities from Switzerland, Great Britian, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Mehrfache heterogene Allianzen und Endosymbiose

In einer Zeit, in der ein dringendes Bewusstsein für die epistemologischen und ontologischen Fragen besteht, die in der zeitgenössischen künstlerischen Wissensproduktion auf dem Spiel stehen, ist das Thema der documenta fifteen “Lumbung” ein ehrgeiziges Statement für eine fortschreitende Ausweitung des Kollektivs auf der Grundlage seiner Konnotation eines sozialen Raums und einer Plattform für die gemeinsame Nutzung öffentlicher Ressourcen, die wiederum rückwirkend definiert, was das Gemeinsame ist. Das Treffen soll eine kollektive diskursive Situation schaffen, die den “Lumbung”-Strategien sehr ähnlich ist und vielfältige heterogene Allianzen und Endosymbiosen von innen heraus verkörpert. Durch die Vermittlung von Wissen für die pluralen Epistemologien, die noch kommen werden, können die marginalisierten ungehorsamen Praktiker und Kollektive artikuliert werden.  

Sandy Lo Hsiu-chih lebt in New Taipei City, Taiwan, und arbeitet als unabhängige Kuratorin, Kunstkritikerin, Filmkritikerin und Filmemacherin.

Zu ihren Forschungsschwerpunkten gehören Urbanistik, philosophische Konstruktion von Raum, Geschlechterpolitik, die Zeitgenossenschaft indigener Kunst und situiertes Wissen. Kuratieren Topografie, eine Methode der kuratorischen Praxis, die sie in den letzten Jahren aktiv angewandt hat, verwendet relative und relationale Raumkonzepte, um verschiedene kulturelle Konzepte im pluralistischen, dialektischen Konzept des Ortes ans Licht zu bringen, um die politische und ethische Transformation im Werden des Ortes zu stärken. Sie ist Mitherausgeberin der zweisprachigen Online-Zeitschrift “Curatography”, die sich auf die Erforschung des Kuratorentums in Asien konzentriert.

Dieses Programm ist Teil der Vortragsreihe der Shared Campus Plattform, Zürcher Hochschule der Künste, im Rahmen einer der Summer Schools von CAMP notes on education.

Die zweiwöchige Summer School will Einfluss nehmen auf Kunst- und kuratorische Ausbildung mit Strategien der Gemeinschaft. Wir laden Studierende, Mitarbeiter*innen und externe Gäste ein, sich gegenseitig zu unterrichten und zu lehren, indem wir situierte Erfahrungen in Praxis und Theorie offen und vertrauensvoll austauschen und diskutieren. Die Studierenden sind Teil der Shared Campus Plattform, einem Netzwerk von acht Partneruniversitäten aus der Schweiz, Großbritannien, Taiwan, Hongkong und Singapur.
